Welcome to the month of May!

Wow, just like that we are in our final month of Autumn. The weather down in the cove has been stunning, it almost seems like winter isn't around the corner. With the last of the warm, sunny days, many have come to visit East Perth to enjoy exercising and socialising in such a beautiful part of Perth. Over the weekend, we were particularly busy. Many families chose Toast for their Mother’s Day celebrations visiting us for breakfast or lunch with their loved ones. Our team was super busy making sure all of our guests had an enjoyable experience.

Many countries have different traditions to celebrate Mother’s and important maternal figures. For the month of May, we have decided to explore how different cultures and countries celebrate their mothers.

India

The Indian tradition also celebrates Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May. Children give their mothers surprise gifts, cook them a meal or take them out for lunch or dinner to show their appreciation for all that their mums do for them. Indian culture also celebrates Durga Puja. This is a ten day festival dedicated to Hindus honouring Durga, who is the goddess of mothers. This festival dates back to the sixteenth century. This is a time to dress up, decorate, dance, spend time with family and sing songs. This festival is held in the beginning of October.

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, Mothers Day - also known as Mothering Sunday - is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This day comes from Christian tradition. In 2022, Mothering Sunday fell on the 27th of March. This dates back to the Middle Ages, when servants and workers were allowed to return home to see their families and Church. Workers would pick flowers on their way home to give to their mothers as a present upon arrival.

Bolivia

Bolivian Mother’s Day is celebrated on the 27th of May instead of the second Sunday of May. Día de la Madre is on this date to commemorate women first being involved in battle. In 1812, South America was trying to fight for their independence from Spain. Many of the men were dying, leaving the Bolivian women wanting to help. On the 27th of May, the women of Bolivia decided to arm themselves with small weapons and join the battle. Although many died, this date now commemorates the bravery and dedication of the women who lost their lives.

Thank you to those who came to Toast for Mother’s Day. We all hope you had a lovely day and that your loved ones felt loved and appreciated.

We hope to see you soon!

We pride ourselves on having friendly and approachable staff so that when you pop down to The Cove for breakfast or lunch, you will feel taken care of. This week we are getting to know another Barista that has been a part of our team for many, many years. Most of our regulars already know her or you may recognise her, but I would like to introduce everyone to Nat!

Nat has been with us for over five years now and is an absolute superstar all rounder. When our customers come in, she is mostly behind the coffee machine these days whipping up amazing coffees with stunning latte art. Nat is always happy to chat and have a laugh with customers and provide excellent customer service on and off the coffee machine. As she has been at Toast for so long, she knows the ins and outs of our cafe so if you have any questions or queries, feel free to ask her and she will be happy to help.

Nat is also responsible for helping out with our marketing and social media side of things. She is a gun at running our Instagram and Facebook. If you see an Instagram story or Facebook post, Nat is most likely behind it. She also loves to post our beautiful sunrises over the Claisebrook Cove.

We have asked Nat a few questions.

Can you tell us about what you’re doing at uni?

After graduating high school, I went into studying Marketing and Public Relations at Curtin University. I started in 2018 and I am graduating this semester. Not long to go now!

What is your favorite menu item on the menu at the moment?

I really like our bruschetta from our new menu at the moment. It is a great size. It’s not too filling and is a light meal to enjoy on my break. Everyone should definitely try out our homemade pesto. Our bruschetta is also very popular with our customers.

What menu item would you like to bring back?

I really loved the avo smash and pomegranate. I found it extremely delicious. Everyone here at Toast was proud that our avo smash made into the Urban Lists top avo smash! Unfortunately pomegranates are not in season at the moment.

What is your go to coffee order at the moment?

At the moment, I typically go for an oat magic with chocolate powder on top. Magics are a very Melbourne style of coffee with two ristrettos shots, served in a small cup. Other than that, I like drinking anything with oat milk and I love experimenting. Most of our staff at Toast love our oat milk.

Since you’re a star at latte art, what is your favourite design and what do you think is the easiest to do.

My favourite art to do is tulips. I find it very easy. I also like experimenting with other flowers and plant inspired art. When I was just beginning on the machine, I found it easy to start off with just doing hearts and working my way up.

What sort of marketing do you help out with behind the scenes at Toast?

I do a lot of the marketing here at Toast. It is good to put my degree into action and get more experience. I do a lot of the social media side of things as well. If we are having any events or functions here, I help Charissa and Mark out with organising everything. At the moment we are having live music on Sunday afternoons so I will often post about that.

What is your favourite thing about Instagram?

I like that I can stay connected to everyone, so easily.

When you’re not on Instagram or whipping up coffees, what do you like doing in your spare time.

Since it is a very busy time at uni at the moment, I am often studying. I also have a marketing internship so I do that two days a week. When I have some down time I like seeing my friends and going to the beach.

Can you please give me a random fact about yourself?

Not many people know this but I can speak Russian.

And lastly, since a lot of people care about this, what is your star sign?

Scorpio, Why?

Next time you’re down in East Perth make sure you come on down and say hello to our Nat!

We are fast approaching the cooler months, where it will be time for umbrellas, jumpers and rain jackets. Here at Toast, the month of April has been extremely busy with the Easter Long Weekend. Down at the cove we had our special Easter Carnival with our mini fair, egg hunt and plenty of fun activities for the kids! As we move through the month, another important event is fast approaching on the 9th of May. Mothers Day!

This year we are putting on a special show, with live music from 12 to 2pm by the amazing local talented artist, Sean Scott. Make sure you get in early to make sure you secure your spot for lunch.

Today we are going to delve a little bit into the history of Mothers Day. Did you know that the earliest mothers day festivities can be traced back to Ancient Greece. This was through the celebration of Rhea – the mother of the Gods. In Ancient Greece she represented motherhood, generation and comfort and ease. This was celebrated through an annual spring festival.

The Mothers day that we are more likely to know stems back to 1908. This occasion was founded by Anna Jarvis. She used this day to hold a memorial for her own mother Ann Jarvis. Anna tirelssy campaigned for this special day to be a yearly occasion. This day was eventually recognised in 1914 by the US president at the time, Woodrow Wilson, who signed a Joint Resolution, recognising that the second Sunday of May each year, would be known by Americans as Mothers Day.

Australia soon followed in this tradition and even added the tradition of gift-giving. Janet Hayden of Leichhardt, NSW in 1923 noticed that in hospitals, many elderly mothers were lonely and had no vistors so Janet encouraged local schools and businesses to donate presents for these women. This soon caught on so now many people give gifts to their mothers on this day.

Whatever this day means to you, Mothers Day has always been an extremely special day down here by the water at Toast. Each year, many families and friends come down to East Perth to celebrate with brunch, morning tea or lunch with their loved ones. We love seeing people coming together to enjoy one of our luscious benedicts by the water, celebrate and spend quality time together. Even if it is just going for a walk and grabbing a takeaway coffee with your loved one, we at Toast love being there for our customers on this special Sunday. We want to help you make sure our Mothers feel extra spoilt and loved. This year we are even offering special gifts for the first 15 tables booked.

My mum, Bev is extremely special to me and I even had the pleasure of her coming in a week ago for some coffee and brunch with my Aunty and cousin. It was her first time in a while coming into Toast because of her busy schedule. I was extremely excited when I saw her walking down the stairs. She has always been there for me and supported me through all my tough challenges in life. It was a treat having her and my family come in and seeing me. Even though I try my best to make my mum feel appreciated all the time, on Mothers Day, I love spoiling her with flowers, breakfast and just letting her have a relaxing day and knowing she is loved.

So whatever Mother’s Day means to you, the team here at Toast hopes your month of May brings many happy memories and lots of love for you and your loved ones.

When you think of March, surely you think of the colour green, right? That’s exactly what I’m thinking.

For this issue of Toast’s flat white, we will look into the month of green.

Firstly, I should introduce myself. I don’t mean to be rude (although a lot of humans would definitely argue this). I am the green machine himself… Doug, the crocodile. I am guest presenting this issue but I may be back in the future. You never know …

Toast’s waterfront location, makes it perfect for me to swim on up and wander up the stairs for some delicious breakfast in East Perth. When I am not restricted to my carnivore diet, I like to sample the delectable weekly specials on Toast’s blackboard. At the moment, I am loving the Breaky Platter, great to share although that’s not really in my nature.

*Did you know crocodiles on average eat only once a week but in extreme circumstances, crocodiles have gone up to two years without eating… Wow, wheres the fun in that? This beats other predators, such as my mate, the great white shark, which can go up to 6 months without eating.

Anyway, me talking about not eating, is making me super hungry. Let’s talk about Toast’s newest addition to the menu … The Green Smoothie … How appropriate, releasing this in the month of green and so close to St. Patricks Day. It looks a bit like me actually. I think the Toasties, should rename the smoothie to be in honour of me. This smoothie, will also leave you like a lean, green machine, like myself with the spirulina and kale. I challenge you to a swim off after drinking this with your brunch.

In other news as I have been waddling around the cafe, I also hear of news about the Easter hunt, which is to be hosted on Sunday, the 4th of April at 12 o’clock, but I already suspect you have seen the posters displayed. I will be attending but not to fear, I will not be stealing any of your beloved Easter eggs, You can keep those! I have my own crocodile eggs to care about. Hmmm… maybe I should go back home and check on them but the brunch here is too yummy to swim back home.

However, when I am in the water doing my rounds, I keep swimming past Nauti Picnics and the Little Ferry Co. These guys are just the best, sometimes if I’m lucky they feed me some of their leftovers. If you want to dine in the water, just like how my pals do (and I should be doing), please snap to it (haha, get it?) and check these guys out.

Anyway, I must be off but please don’t shed any crocodile tears as I will return soon, I promise.

See you later, alligator,

Doug.

Thank you for everyone who came down with their friend, lover, or doggo to our quaint waterfront café in East Perth to celebrate the month of love.

As we say goodbye to month of February, it is important to remember what love is. This month has given us the opportunity to recognise what truly matters, Humanity and Love, especially in these unprecedented times.

There are five love languages people express and receive love. Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Gifts, Quality Time, Physical Touch

And food is a component that encompasses all of that.

Our Toast team love to see our customers form special bonds everyday whilst enjoying our toast blend coffee and all-day brunch. Whether it be first dates, birthdays, catch-ups, just part of your morning run group, a cycling pit stop, and more …We love to be a part of it.

We asked our toast team what love means to them. And this is what they have to say.

“I realised I appreciate action over words. Not that I just love people doing things for me..haha” Natalya Gonsalves.

“Love for me … is Life. It feels like a flame in my heart. I can’t really describe it.” Sous chef Riadi

“Means a hug from my mum…” Anonymous

“Love is a getting a hug from Murphy’s mum” Another Anonymous

“Love is the warmth that fills your soul on a Friday night when you watch the sun set over the horizon.” Ben Kelly

“Love is a Sunday morning… No… Love is when Ben buys me the $400 dollar pair of shoes that I want.” Dylan Salvia

“Love is coming home and my boyfriend has already gotten all the ingredients set out for me.” Apprentice chef

“Love is when I don’t order chips but my boyfriend lets me have the chips anyway” Shannon Ford

“Love for me is the sound of beer’ tab being opened after a long day at work” Sarah Michau

What is your love language? Have you told someone special how much you mean to them today?

Sending out Much Love to you all toasties!

xoxo

Ever woken up to a beautiful sunrise, But just wanted to cure your hangover?

Lemuel Benedict did. With a good brunch.

In 1894 New York, Lemuel, worked as a stockbroker on Wallstreet, ordered “buttered toast, poached eggs, crisp bacon, and a hooker of hollandaise” at the Waldorf after a long night. The Maitre’ D named it after Lemuel after discovering how well it worked.

Since then, this American classic food has now evolved around the world. Especially in a little waterfront view café in East Perth located in the land down under.

At Toast, we have a whole section dedicated to curing the ailments of a night well spent.

SO……WHAT’S IN A NAME?

The BENEDICT

Need I say more. Thank you. Lemuel Benedict.

The FLORENTINE with Spinach

Originating from the Italian city, Florence. A la Florentine is often as a dish served with spinach. We throw in a splash of fresh squeezed lemon juice and a little butter.

The KEVIN with Bacon

As a tribute to the iconic actor Kevin Bacon. With a last name like Bacon, how can you not.

Fun fact: It is said that everyone in Hollywood is only separated by 6 degrees of separation to Kevin Bacon.

The NORWEGIAN with Salmon

Norway has the first and biggest producers of Salmon. It produces half of the world’s salmon. And its rivers have the most abundant and diverse species of wild salmon.

How long have you made coffees and where?

Two years in London, two years in Japan and now 10 months in Perth.

What do you like about making coffee?

I like to do latte art and I can see my improvement every time. And it’s simply beautiful.

I have a passion for art but I’m not good at drawing so this is the closest thing to creating art as I can get.

What coffee order do you drink at the moment?

An oat milk piccolo latte with chocolate powder on top

What is a fun fact about yourself?

I can speak Korean, and even better than I speak English. But I have still never had a Korean boyfriend…

What hobbies do you have (other than making coffee)?

Definitely travelling! I’m obsessed with vintage clothes. I love thrifting. I also enjoy going to the museum and art gallery.

Recently I’ve started my own YouTube channel. I had only been in Perth for a month when COVID-19 hit. Of course I then had to stay home – so YouTube became something I could do. I enjoy making videos about the coffee culture in Perth and the life of a barista.

Currently, what is your favourite staff meal on your break?

My go-to is the bruschetta always!

But recently I’ve been loving the wild mushrooms on a bagel but with no feta.

What do you like best about working at Toast?

There are so many regular customers. It’s so nice to talk to them almost everyday and hear their stories. Toast almost feels like a family.

Compared to working in Japan, the culture is much more relaxed and I have more freedom in things I do. Everyone is very open and listens.I can share my ideas and be more creative in what I do. Toast is really unique and I can express myself individually and creatively – even through what I wear!

Also there are DOLPHINS! Claisebrook Cove has wild dolphins that I can see right from the coffee machine. At first I was a little bit shocked because I was the only person to be surprised to see the dolphins swimming in the Cove and all the other staff thought it was normal. So I am very lucky I can now see dolphins in my daily life 🙂

As the festive lights glistened on the river, our kitchen team served up sensational dishes; from charred grilled prawns with mango salsa and Moroccan lamb cutlets with mango puree to mango panna cotta with granola, it was a feast for the senses.

Claire, Toast regular

This fabulous evening of conversation and connection has helped us to shape the menu at Toast. We know what we like, but hey, it’s not about us…at least not all the time.

We want you to love our food. To be excited by it. To come to Toast and know you can order that dish you’ve been obsessing about since the last time you were here. It’s got to be right for you.

The menu tasting came together as a really special night for Toast, creating memories at our long table by the river. The chefs got to experience the reaction to their mango inspired dishes first- hand. And we loved relaxing with our regulars, suppliers and friends. It’s a really important part of what we do.
